Remembering Your Lost Pet During Holiday Season

Holidays can be a particularly challenging time after I lost my cat. All the wonderful holiday memories and experiences that we shared together for the past years can no longer be recreated. With all the holiday lights shining and flashing, the empty spot at my house and in my heart becomes more and more noticeable.

This is the first holiday after Shin lost her dog, Kuli, who was with her and her family for nine years before abruptly passing away in a car accident. For Shin, loneliness is one of the themes of this holiday, if not the biggest. This loneliness is twofold. When feeling lonely without the presence of Kuli, Shin also worried that Kuli might be lonely on the other side of the rainbow bridge. I assured her that there are many other pet angels across the rainbow bridge that would keep Kuli company, including my cat Miaomiao.

Apparently, Kuli’s other human friends also share the same feeling. Last month, one of Kuli’s human friends, Ye-Eun, brought over a beautiful bouquet of flowers to Shin’s family’s house. Ye-Eun is a flower florist and designed this bouquet while thinking of Kuli. It is heartwarming to know that your pet is loved and remembered by others even after they are gone. After all, pets spend their whole lives spreading so much love. Looking at this bouquet of flowers that sits in the living room for this holiday season, Shin’s family can feel the presence of Kuli’s spirit, as well as the return of love that Kuli once spread out.

If you miss your pet angel, make something--draw a picture, do some coloring, make a small craft, frame a photo and decorate the frame--while thinking of them, to remember their love and spirit.
